Official Decision: Referree Charley Daggert is forced to stop fight due to swelling and cut over Fitz left eye. Ali is ahead on all judges scorecards 60-55 at time of stoppage.

Cox's Comments: Ali too big and fast for Fitzsimmons. His left jab was on the mark and his superfast combinations bewildered the smaller man. Ali scored knockdowns in the 5th and 7th, he was on his way to a knockout when Ref forced to stop fight as Fitz could no longer see out of his left eye.

Official Decision: Referee Ed Smith counts out Sharkey in 11th round.

Cox's Comments: Jeff proves too strong and powerful for the "Boston Gob". A left hook scores an early kd in 2nd. Jeffries body punching and aggressiveness has him in firm control after 9 rounds. In 10th he redopsits Sharkey on canvas. In 11th a barrage of blows finishes him off.

Official Decision: Ref Tommy Thomas halts bout in 9th after third knockdown of the round.

Cox's Comments: Langford's defense neutralized Douglas jab as he managed to land only16 jabs cleanly in this fight. Langford counter-punched successfully. He was ahead 80-71, 80-71, and 80-70 after 8 rounds. All three knockdowns came in 9th as Langford opened up to finish his out-classed opponent.

Official Decision: Referree Tony Perez stops fight in 15th round after Holyfield barely beats count.

Cox's Comments: The fight is competive the first 10 rounds, then Holyfield begins to tire badly. Jeannette is landing far more often. A combination decks an exhausted Holyfield in the 14th. In the 15th a hard left hook puts him down again. He gets up at 9 but has nothing left. Ref is forced to stop fight.

Official Decision: 150-138, 150-139, 150-138 Unamimous Decision

Cox's Comments: Holmes pitches a shut-out. Holmes jab too much for Willard to contend with. A big right cross reminiscent of the right that put down Cooney drops Jess in 2nd round in like manner. Willard stunned but not really hurt. He takes a Tex Cobb beating for remainder of bout. An easy win for Holmes.

Official Decision: Rudy Valan stops fight in first.

Cox's Comments: Dempsey slips a jab and hammers a crushing right to the heart. Dempsey digs both hands to the body.  A left hook to the head, and a final right to the head that drops Wills on his back. He is hurt but gets up at 9 on wobbly legs. The Ref stops the bout (some fans think a bit soon). Wills is big and powerful but a slow fighter. Dempsey had his best bouts against such men e.g 6'6" Jess Willard, and 6'6" Fred Fulton- who he ko'd in 18 seconds. This fight didn't last much longer.

Official Decision: Ref Buck McTiernan counts out Moorer in first round.

Cox's Comments: McVey searches for opening and figures besy way to deal with southpaw is to hit him on the chin. A devastating right cross does just that. Moorer tries to get up at 8 but rolls on his back. He is out.

Jack Johnson W 15 un. over Gene Tunney

Official Decision: 146-143, 146-144, 145-143 Johnson

Cox's Comments: Tunney started off well in the early rounds showing good footwork, and a nice jab. The pace was slow with a lot of clinching. Johnson was better inside, especially to the body. Starting in the 9th Jack J. adapted and got his uppercut working and appeared to hurt Tunney. Johnson swept the late rounds on all of the offficials cards to pull out the decision which was well deserved.

Official Decision: Ref Frank Cappucino stops the massacre in the first round.

Cox's Comments: A rampaging Tyson drops Johansson with first right he lands, after taking Ingo's best right without a flinch. Tyson attacks a wobbly Ingo on the ropes. A murderous uppercut has Johansson defenseless when he is rescued by the Ref.

Official Decision: Ref Frank Sikora stops fight in 12th due to Liston's badly swollen right eye.

Cox's Comments: Liston was ahead on 2 of the 3 judges scorecards at time of stoppage: 106-104, 105-103, 103-103. It was a great fight with Bowe starting off strong in first round . Liston was in trouble in 3rd. In 4th a big left hook by Sonny turned the tide dropping Bowe for the only knockdown of the fight. Liston then carried the middle rounds. Sonny began to have vision problems in the 10th. In the 12th Ref called over ring doctor to examine Liston's eye. He then stopped the fight and awarded it to Bowe.

Official Decision: Bout is stopped by Ref Jamie Valencia in twelvth round.

Cox's Comments: Lennox poor habit of dropping his left after jabbing cost him against Schmeling as it did against Oliver McCall. Max proved to be a very intelligent and resourceful counter-puncher. Lennox began to absorb hard right hands reminiscent of Botha against Briggs. Lewis became tentative and was leary to throw the left. Schemling strong right counter was his key to victory as it was in his first fight against the other fighter named Louis in 1936. Max put the larger man down in the 10th with a right and again in the 12th. Lewis was wobbling about when Ref Jamie Valencia called a halt to the action.

Offical Decision: Ref Paul Cavalier counts out Walcott after Jersey Joe is dropped in 15th by irrepressible Frazier left hook.

Cox's Comments: Walcott was very competitive in this fight. Frazier scored knockdowns in 4th and 15th, Walcott in the 7th. Left hooks did all of the damage. At the time of the stoppage Frazier had a lead on 2 of the 3 judges scorecards 133-134, 134-132, 135-131. Smokin' Joes body attack finally wore down Walcott in the late rounds.

Official Decision: Mike Spinks is counted out in 1st round by Ref Dick Young.

Cox's Comments: Rocky puts pressure on in landing with good body shots as Spinks tries to jab and move. A left hook hurts Michael, and a hard right to the body makes him wince. Another body shot visibly hurts him. A Rocky right to the jaw drops Mike on one knee. He is up after 2 but shaky, a final barrage of blows by Rocky sends him down for keeps.

Official Decision: Ref Larry Hazaard stops fight in first. Floyd protested but was in no shape to continue.

Cox's Comments: Floyd's peek-a-boo defense is shattered by the bone-crunching power of Foreman. A looping right has Patterson on queer street. A booming uppercut lifts him up off his feet and has him down on all fours. He beats count but was wobbly when the Ref stops the fight. A few stray boos can be heard toward Ref Larry Hazzard.

Official Decision: A wicked left hook in combination drops Charles in 11th round. Charles struggles but cannot beat the count of Ref Art Donovan.

Cox's Comments: Charles was facing a prime Louis in this fight not a 35 year old rusted from years of inactivity. The battle of jabs is near equal. Louis was the effective aggressor and landed some hard body shots in each round. Both fighters faces were marked. A bolt out of the blue- a sizzling right cross caught Ezzard coming off the ropes at the end of the 8th and dropped him. He beat count but was saved by the bell. Louis finally finished his elusive opponent in the 11th as he again caught Charles near the ropes with his fast hands. The final combination came in a sudden torrent of blows.

ELIMINATED THIS ROUND: (None. It takes two defeats to eliminate a fighter from the tournament.) All 32 heavyweights will back back again next round.
